Thread rolling and its advantages – Cold forming instead of cutting

Thread rolling is a cold forming process that offers significant advantages over material-removing methods such as thread cutting. During rolling, no material is removed. The workpiece is plastically deformed under high pressure between two dies, forming the desired thread shape through deformation.

“In contrast to cutting, our machines produce no material loss, and the resulting threads have an exceptionally smooth surface and increased strength. This is due to work hardening during the process, which densifies and aligns the material’s fiber structure.”

An overview of our Solutions

Quality, precision, and experience

AMBA thread rolling machines are designed for durability, robustness, and maximum performance. Each machine is individually tailored to the customer’s products and is designed and manufactured in-house.

Bolts and fasteners made from threaded round bars are used predominantly in constructions with glued laminated timber, also called glulam. As the threads extend over the complete length of the bolts, these fasteners guarantee safe and durable bonding between the laminated layers. They comply with applicable safety regulations stipulating that glulams have to be fastened with full-thread bolts under all circumstances.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does a thread rolling machine do?

A thread rolling machine forms threads not by cutting, but by rolling. The part is deformed between two profiled flat-dies, creating the thread shape. This process enables highly precise production with strong, smooth threads. Unlike thread cutting, material usage is lower, and the dies have a significantly longer service life.

Which standards apply to thread rolling?

Rolled profiles are subject to various international standards, including ISO and DIN. These define dimensions, tolerances, and surface quality of the threads produced. AMBA aligns its thread rolling machines strictly with these standards, ensuring that all threads meet the highest industrial requirements and can be used across different industries worldwide.

Which products are thread rolling machines suitable for?

The BBW thread rolling machine is ideal for producing long fully threaded screws, bolts, turned parts, and other components with large lengths and diameters. This sets us apart from other providers. In timber construction, AMBA BBW machines are used to produce fully threaded screws required for load-bearing structures. They are also advantageous in industrial applications where high strength and precise surface quality are critical.

What makes the BBW Wide-Die thread rolling machines special?

The uniqueness of our thread rolling machines lies in the wide dies and robust construction. The BBW can roll up to 40 fully threaded parts per minute with threads up to 600 mm long and 13 mm in diameter. This design ensures maximum efficiency, consistent quality, and top performance. AMBA thread rolling machines are the ideal choice for manufacturers producing large volumes with consistent precision and minimal effort.
